At its 48th plenary meeting, on 22 July 2004, the Economic and Social Council took note of Commission on Human Rights resolution 2004/40 of 19 April 200415 and approved the decision of the Commission to extend for three years the mandate of the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances.

The Council also approved the Commission’s request to the intersessional open-ended working group to elaborate a draft legally binding normative instrument for the protection of all persons from enforced disappearance to meet for a period of fifteen working days in two formal sessions before the sixtyfirst session of the Commission, with one session of ten working days and one session of five working days, the latter held from within existing resources, with a view to the prompt completion of its work, and to report to the Commission at its sixty-first session.
