After consultations of the Security Council held on 4 August 2000, the President of the Security Council made the following statement to the media on behalf of the Council:

“The members of the Security Council are looking forward to the Millennium Summit of the United Nations, which will provide a unique opportunity to strengthen the role of the United Nations in meeting the challenges of the twenty-first century.

“Conscious of the important tasks facing the international community in the area of peacekeeping, the members of the Security Council have decided that the Council will meet on 7 September 2000 at the level of Heads of State and Government to consider the topic ‘Ensuring an effective role of the Security Council in the maintenance of international peace and security, particularly in Africa’.

“The members of the Security Council believe that such a meeting will make a valuable contribution towards achieving the major purpose of the Millennium Summit aimed at strengthening the United Nations.”
