At its 50th plenary meeting, on 29 July 2011, the Economic and Social Council:

(a) Took note of the report of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues on its tenth session;72

(b) Noted the importance for the Permanent Forum to continue to adhere to its mandate and to take into account concerns of United Nations Member States, indigenous peoples and all other stakeholders while dealing with particular situations and also noted that the Permanent Forum should continue to ensure that its studies are conducted in a fully independent, transparent, impartial and objective manner;

Adoption of the agenda and organization of work.

194. 2011/201. Elections, nominations, confirmations and appointments to subsidiary and related bodies of the Economic and Social Council

At its 51st plenary meeting, on 6 October 2011, the Economic and Social Council took the following action with regard to vacancies in its subsidiary and related bodies:

Election

The Council elected the following five members for a three-year term beginning on 1 January 2012 and expiring on 31 December 2014: CHINA, CZECH REPUBLIC, JAPAN, UNITED

The Council postponed the election of one member from Latin American and Caribbean States for a three-year term beginning on 1 January 2012 and expiring on 31 December 2014.

Elections postponed from previous sessions

The Council elected ZIMBABWE to fill an outstanding vacancy on the Commission for a four-year term beginning on 1 January 2012 and expiring on 31 December 2015.

The Council further postponed the election of one member from African States for a four-year term beginning on 1 January 2012 and expiring on 31 December 2015.

The Council elected NIGERIA to fill an outstanding vacancy on the Commission for a three-year term beginning on 1 January 2012 and expiring on 31 December 2014.

The Council elected ISRAEL to fill an outstanding vacancy on the Commission for a term beginning on the date of election and expiring at the close of the twenty-second session of the Commission, in 2014.

The Council elected SWEDEN to fill an outstanding vacancy on the Commission for a term beginning on the date of election and expiring on 31 December 2014.

The Council elected TUNISIA to fill an outstanding vacancy on the Intergovernmental Working Group for a three-year term beginning on 1 January 2012 and expiring on 31 December 2014.

The Council further postponed the election of three members from Latin American and Caribbean States and four members from Western European and other States for terms beginning on the date of election and expiring on 31 December 2011; four members from Asian States and one member from Latin American and Caribbean States for terms beginning on the date of election and expiring on 31 December 2012; and thirteen members for a three-year term beginning on 1 January 2012 and expiring on 31 December 2014, as follows: one member from

195. African States, two members from Asian States, one member from Latin American and Caribbean States and nine members from Western European and other States.

The Council elected ITALY to fill an outstanding vacancy on the Governing Council for a four-year term beginning on 1 January 2012 and expiring on 31 December 2015.

The Council further postponed the election of two members from Western European and other States for terms beginning on the date of election and expiring on 31 December 2011; two members from Western European and other States for terms beginning on the date of election and expiring on 31 December 2012; and two members from Eastern European States and two members from Western European and other States for a four-year term beginning on 1 January 2012 and expiring on 31 December 2015.

Nomination

The Council nominated GUINEA, GUINEA-BISSAU and ITALY for election by the General Assembly for a three-year term beginning on 1 January 2012 and expiring on 31 December 2014.

The Council further postponed the nomination of three members from Western European and other States for terms beginning on the date of election by the General Assembly and expiring on 31 December 2011; one member from Asian States for a term beginning on the date of election by the Assembly and expiring on 31 December 2013; and one member from Asian States and four members from Western European and other States for a three-year term beginning on 1 January 2012 and expiring on 31 December 2014.

At its 54th plenary meeting, on 5 December 2011, the Economic and Social Council took the following actions with regard to vacancies in its subsidiary and related bodies:

The Council elected BANGLADESH, NEPAL and VIET NAM to fill outstanding vacancies on the Commission for a term beginning on the date of election and expiring at the close of the fiftythird session of the Commission, in 2015.

The Council further postponed the election of one member from Eastern European States for a term beginning on the date of election and expiring at the close of the fifty-first session of the Commission, in 2013; one member from Eastern European States and one member from Western European and other States for terms beginning on the date of election and expiring at the close of the fifty-third session of the Commission, in 2015; and two members from Latin American and Caribbean States and one member from Western European and other States for a four-year term beginning at the first meeting of the fifty-first session of the Commission, in 2012, and expiring at the close of the fifty-fourth session of the Commission, in 2016.

The Council elected ALGERIA for a three-year term beginning on 1 January 2012 and expiring on 31 December 2014, to replace NIGERIA, which was resigning from its seat on the Commission effective 1 January 2012.

196. Election of members from the regional category in accordance with Council resolution 2010/35

The Council elected the following Member States to replace members of the Executive Board of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women) who were resigning from their seats effective 1 January 2012: CANADA, to complete the term of office of FRANCE (expiring on 31 December 2012); FINLAND, to complete the term of office of DENMARK (expiring on 31 December 2013); the NETHERLANDS, to complete the term of office of LUXEMBOURG (expiring on 31 December 2013); NEW ZEALAND, to complete the term of office of ITALY (expiring on 31 December 2012); and the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, to complete the term of office of SWEDEN (expiring on 31 December 2013).

Election of members from the top ten contributing countries in accordance with paragraph 61 (a) of General Assembly resolution 64/289

The Council elected SWEDEN for a term beginning on 1 January 2012 and expiring on 31 December 2013, to complete the term of office of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, which was resigning from its seat on the Executive Board effective 1 January 2012.

The Council elected GUATEMALA to fill an outstanding vacancy on the Executive Board from Latin American and Caribbean States for a three-year term beginning on 1 January 2012 and expiring on 31 December 2014.

ON HIV/AIDS

The Council elected CANADA and NORWAY to fill outstanding vacancies on the Programme Coordinating Board for a three-year term beginning on 1 January 2012 and expiring on

31 December 2014.

The Council elected ISRAEL to fill an outstanding vacancy on the Governing Council for a four-year term beginning on 1 January 2012 and expiring on 31 December 2015.

The Council further postponed the election of two members from Western European and other States for terms beginning on the date of election and expiring on 31 December 2011; two members from Western European and other States for terms beginning on the date of election and expiring on 31 December 2012; and two members from Eastern European States and one member from Western European and other States for a four-year term beginning on 1 January 2012 and expiring on 31 December 2015.

The Council elected CHILE for a term beginning on 1 January 2012 and expiring on 31 December 2012, to fill a vacancy arising from the expiration of the term of GUATEMALA as a Council member elected to the Organizational Committee.
