At its 44th plenary meeting, on 25 July 2008, the Economic and Social Council, recalling General Assembly resolution 1166 (XII) of 26 November 1957, in which the Assembly had requested the Council to establish the Executive Committee of the Programme of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, as well as subsequent resolutions of the Assembly, in which the membership of the Executive Committee was increased:

(a) Took note of the requests to enlarge the membership of the Executive Committee contained in the letter dated 29 February 2008 from the Permanent Representative of Djibouti to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General65 and the letter dated 30 May 2008 from the Chargé d’affaires a.i. of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Moldova to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General;66

(b) Recommended that the General Assembly at its sixty-third session decide on the question of enlarging the membership of the Executive Committee from seventy-six to seventy-eight States.
