At its 3rd plenary meeting, on 8 February 2008, the Economic and Social Council, recalling its decision 2007/213 of 15 March 2007, in which it decided to include a discussion on promoting an integrated approach to rural development in developing countries for poverty eradication and sustainable development as part of the work of its substantive session of 2008, decided that the theme for the 2008 thematic discussion for the high-level segment would be “Promoting an

integrated approach to rural development in developing countries for poverty eradication and sustainable development, taking into account current challenges”.
