At its 49th plenary meeting, on 22 July 2004, the

Economic and Social Council took note of the statement by the

Chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights of 21 April

2004 on technical cooperation in the field of human rights in

Afghanistan, adopted by consensus at the sixtieth session of the

Commission and endorsed the Commission’s request to the

Secretary-General to extend the mandate of the independent

expert on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan for a

further year, and the request to the independent expert to report

to the General Assembly at its fifty-ninth session and to the

Commission at its sixty-first session.
